Take credit for making an Echo Park band famous: Send Cinderella Motel to SXSW

February 7, 2010 in Featured by Citilista

CINDERELLA MOTEL – you know those rock, post-punk, cabaret indie darlings – has a new video for their single,
‘Automatic Pleasure’ that we’d like everyone to see.

You can discover some new music and perhaps send them to play at The Roxy in Austin for SXSW.

YouTube Preview Image

Please support local businesses, and that includes local musicians and artists such as Cinderella Motel, which is fronted by real people: Tammy Tomahawk (Vox / Electric Accordion / Guitar) and Raul Guerrero (Drums). This time it’s easy: just sit back and watch.

But for Tammy Tomahawk’s sake click play now as the contest ends TOMORROW at noon.

And here’s a FREE Download of the full version of ‘Automatic Pleasure.’

*** Next shows: 3/2 @ SilverLake Lounge w. Taxi & Sing Orpheus
Wolf Gallery Whittier, CA Sat Mar 06 10 09:00 PM

(come get dirty!) but wear your clean EchoParkOnline shirt and Tammy might give you a kiss.

And if you’re still not convinced: “Tammy Tomahawk’s vocals are stellar, retaining a feminine quality despite a rough Joan Jett-esque howl. Stephanie Freitag, The Deli Magazine LA

Please join Echo Park Online and Art Needs Freedom next Saturday February 6th from 12-6pm!
A message from the creator Heather Mendoza:
I am creating a sidewalk gallery “Art Hop” in Echo Park and would love for YOU to be a part of it! A one day event that will turn the neighborhood of Echo Park into a fun, playful and engaging artistic landscape! Imagine, gathering with your group of friends on the corner of Echo Park Ave. and Delta St. Bundled up in L.A. winter gear, not quite sure what adventure you’re about to get into, you’re handed a map. On this map you discover the sites of chain link fence galleries, driveway theaters, a hands on crafting station, performance art, intersection musical performances, outdoor movie screenings, sculptures, parking lot mini concerts and other various creative & mind stimulating public displays of ART. Before the adventure begins, you and your friends head into Chango for a hot cocoa or latte, with a side of scone. If you’re an artist, musician, an Echo Park Ave. business owner or resident, neighbor, friend, all of the above (or none of the above) and want to get involved or support this community event please email me! heather@ArtNeedsFreedom.com WE WILL BE GIVING AWAY FREE ECHO PARK ONLINE T-SHIRTS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS.

(flyer design by Dale Dreiling)
One of the inspirations for the Echo Park PDA Art walk was through my travels in Europe. I fell in love walking through the streets, little crowds of people everywhere, checking out a different array of shops, sitting reading a book, having coffee, or just sharing space with a few strangers. What I really loved, as well as the wonderful appreciation for the arts there, was the sense of community, the sense of being part something and connecting to other people. What I have found here in Echo Park is like finding a hidden gem. It’s wonderfully eclectic and unique. Saturated with a diverse group of people, little boutiques and galleries, coffee shops, and cafes. So much of Los Angeles is experienced through driving in a car, which is often very isolating. This event calls out to Angelenos to experience< EXPLORE & ENGAGE!
Through the arts, my mission is to not to only inspire people to explore new places and events, but to bring communities together to connect, celebrate, and share space.
The Echo Park PDA (public displays of art) is a one day event that will turn the neighborhood into a fun, playful and engaging artistic landscape.

* a walk through an artistic landscape
* discover, connect, share space, get involved in community
* 20+ artists, live music, bike race, food trucks, break dancing
contest, video art and screenings, special in store promotions,
good vibes
* discovery

Brentwood Doctor Gets 5 Years for Intentionally Injuring Cyclists

January 8, 2010 in Featured by Citilista

Today in court a Brentwood doctor was handed down a 5 year jail sentence for intentionally running into two cyclists and severely injuring them with his car. The sentence came down after hundreds of letters were written to the Judge on the case, pleading for a harsh punishment. The doctor, Christopher Thomas Thompson who was quoted as saying he “wanted to teach the cyclists a lesson” reportedly remained remorseless throughout the trial.

As a reminder to all those who ride bicyclists in Echo Park and beyond…please be careful! There are obviously some very crazy drivers out there! Always wear a helmet and it is best to assume at all times that drivers can not see you. We here are Echo Park Online salute you cyclists! You are heroes, keeping the air clean, traffic down and taking back the road- just remember, it’s a mad world out there!

Echo Park makes top 10 list

January 6, 2010 in Featured by Citilista

Franklin Avenue compiled an interesting list of the top 10 things Los Angeles lost in 2009.

No. 1 was the Angeles National Forest because of the fires. Chief Bratton and the Brown Derby also made the list.

Coming in at No. 8., The Echo Park Lotus Festival and even the lotus.

epo lotus

“The first big event I ever took Evan to, the Echo Park Lotus Festival, didn’t take place this year — a victim of budget cuts, and even sadder, the death of the once-vibrant lotus blooms in Echo Park,” Mike of Franklin Park wrote.

The lake will be drained and cleaned this year. Hopefully the lotus make a return in 2011.
